Terms and conditions

1. The Promoter

This raffle is organised by Staithes Museum and Heritage Trust, for the benefit of Staithes Museum.

The Trust is registered with Scarborough Council to promote small society lotteries.

The person responsible for promoting this lottery is Rosalind Barnes, Manager / Curator of Staithes Museum.

For queries about the raffle, please contact Staithes Museum through the contact details provided on our website.

2. The Prize

The prize is one original, framed oil painting by artist Ian Burdall, generously donated by the artist. The painting depicts a view of Staithes Beck with a traditional coble tied up in the water.

There is one prize and one winner. The prize is not exchangeable for cash or an alternative item.

3. Tickets and Entry

Tickets cost £5 each.

A maximum of 200 tickets will be available. Each valid, paid ticket constitutes one entry into the draw. Multiple tickets may be purchased while tickets remain available.

Tickets can be purchased through the Staithes Museum web shop or in person at the museum shop.

After payment has been received, the Museum will randomly allocate a unique ticket number to each ticket purchased. Ticket numbers will not be duplicated. Purchasers will be sent confirmation of their allocated number.

Purchasers must provide accurate contact details, including an email address and telephone number, so that the Museum can confirm ticket numbers and contact the winner.

Only paid-for tickets with a unique number allocated by the Museum will be entered into the draw.

4. The Prize Draw

The winning ticket number will be drawn at random on Friday 4 December 2026.

The draw will take place even if fewer than 200 tickets have been sold. Only numbers allocated to valid, paid-for tickets will be eligible to win.

Each ticket has an equal chance of winning. If all 200 tickets are sold, the chance of a particular ticket winning is 1 in 200. If fewer tickets are sold, the odds will depend on the total number of valid entries.

The Museum will retain a record of the ticket numbers issued and the winning number.

5. Contacting the Winner

The winner will be contacted using the email address and telephone number supplied when purchasing the ticket. The Museum will make reasonable efforts to contact the winner within seven days of the draw.

The winner should respond within 28 days of the Museum's first attempt to notify them. If the winner cannot be contacted or does not claim the prize within that period, despite reasonable attempts to make contact, the Museum reserves the right to conduct a further random draw to select an alternative winner.

The Museum may request confirmation of the winner's identity and ticket details before arranging collection of the prize.

6. Prize Collection or Delivery

The winner should contact the Museum to arrange collection of the painting at a mutually agreed time.

If the winner cannot collect the prize in person, any alternative delivery arrangements must be agreed with the Museum.

7. How the Money Raised Will Be Used

The raffle aims to raise up to £1,000 in gross ticket sales to help keep Staithes Museum sustainable and open during the colder winter months.

The painting has been donated by the artist. After any necessary payment-processing and administration costs, the proceeds will support the Museum's charitable purposes, including caring for its collections and keeping the museum open for visitors.

8. Changes or Cancellation

The Museum intends to hold the draw on Friday 4 December 2026. If circumstances beyond the Museum's reasonable control make a change necessary, the Museum will consult the relevant licensing authority as required and make reasonable efforts to notify ticket purchasers using the contact details provided.

If the draw is postponed, existing valid tickets will remain eligible for the rescheduled draw. If the raffle is cancelled entirely, ticket purchasers will be refunded the price paid for their tickets.

9. Personal Information

Contact information provided when purchasing a ticket will be used to administer the raffle, confirm ticket numbers, contact the winner and fulfil the prize.

Personal information will be handled in accordance with the Museum's privacy policy. It will not be used for unrelated marketing unless the purchaser has separately agreed to receive marketing communications.

The Museum will not publish the winner's personal contact details. Any public announcement identifying the winner will be made only with their agreement.

10. General

By purchasing a ticket, the purchaser confirms that they have read and accepted these terms and conditions.

The raffle will be conducted in accordance with the Gambling Act 2005 and the applicable requirements of the Museum's small society lottery registration.

Nothing in these terms and conditions affects any statutory rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.
